50 Secrets of "Fifty Shades of Grey"

1. E.L James began "Fifty Shades of Grey" as a work of fan fiction, inspired by Bella and Edward of Twilight and making their relationship more adult. It was originally called Master and Servant.

2. A rollcall of actresses were reportedly in the running: Emma Watson and Elizabeth Olsen denied it, but Keeley Hazell auditioned twice and actress Lucy Hale called her audition "uncomfortable."

3. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ryan Gosling was "the original prototype for the 27-year-old billionaire with a penchant for S&M, but he was not interested."

4. Ian Somerhalder, however, was "absolutely" interested, although the role went to Northern Irishman Jamie Dornan.

5. Before Dornan, Charlie Hunnam was signed up, then dropped out due to clashes with his commitments on Sons of Anarchy. But sources told WHO he quit because "he didn't want the Robert Pattinson--esque attention that would come with taking the role."

6. Even though he is out, Hunnam is still all for it. "If they invite me to the premiere, I will go and see it there...If not, I'll go and buy some tickets on opening night."

7. Pop star Rita Ora scored her first major casting role in Fifty Shades of Grey as Christian's  sister Mia: "I did, like, eight auditions, so I thought I would never get it." She didn't, despite asking, get to contribute to the soundtrack.

8. Beyoncé did: a slowed-down, sexed-up version of her 2004 hit "Crazy in Love" features in the trailer.

9. The video for Ellie Goulding's soundtrack contribution, "Love me like you do", was played more than 800, 00 times in the first 24 hours. Sample lyric: "You're the cure/You're the pain/You're he only thing I want to touch."

10. Items in the official range of sex toys endorsed by E.L James include nipple rings ($14.99), "Inner Goddess" pleasure balls ($42.99), vibrators and a deluxe wrist-tie ($28.99).

11. The official Christian Grey tie that appears on the original book cover can be yours for $19.99.

12. Bridget Jones's Diary author Helen Fielding "loved" the trilogy. "I think one of the secrets to success--apart from the sex--is that it's a real classic Cinderella story, though of course Cinderella would never get involved in S&M."

13. Although the book is set in Seattle, the movie was filmed largely in Vancouver, Canada.

14. American Psycho author Brett Easton Ellis expressed interest in writting the screenplay, but Kelly Marcel, who wrote the screenplay for Saving Mr. Banks, was given the nod.

15.  The first of four teaser posters, showing Christian standing at his office window with the words "Mr Grey will see you now" made its debut more than a year prior to the film's premiere. It opens in Australia on Feb 12.

16. Christian Grey's penthouse apartment is in the Escala building in Seattle, which James described from the internet. In July 2012, the penthouse--sans Red Room of Pain-- sold for $6 million.

17. The official wine range includes Red Satin and White Silk. "We sampled a few blends until we came up with one we were happy with, and that I felt Christian would be happy with, too," says E.L James. Both are $17.99 a bottle; $215.88 a case of 12.

18.  The first trailer for the movie broke the record for the biggest online trailer launch in history, with more than 100 million views in its first week.

19. Newly minted Oscar nominee Eddie Redmayne was interested in playing Christian, he revealed, but author E.L James wasn't down with that. "She took to Twitter to go, 'Under no circumstances!'" Eddie reveled. "It was like, all right, all right" Am I that bad? I can put a whip in my hand. I can get all kinky, can't I? Apparently not."

20. Screenwriter Kelly Marcel had to get specific, sexually. She "had to actually describe everything! It was really embarrassing when you're doing studio notes around the table with 12 people."

21. The infamous bathtub scene features the Halo tub by Vancouver's Blu Bathworks. It's yours from $8,300, not including shipping.

22. Director Sam Taylor-Johnson says the onscreen sex isn't overt: "It's details, flesh and fingers and skin and eyes and looks."

23. Music director Danny Elfman has a good track record--you may know him from such productions as The Simpsons. He has four Oscar nominations, a Grammy (for Tim Burton's Batman) and an Emmy (for the Desperate Housewives theme).

24. Christian has a grand piano in his penthouse. In that spirit, E.L James selected the tracks for EMI Records' Fifty Shades of Grey: The Classical Album, including Maria Tipo performing the aria from Goldberg Variations.

25. The real Heathman Hotel in Portland, immortalised  in the first book, offers a $US2, 750 "Charlie Tango" package, which features food and wine, a limo to the helipad for a tour of Portland, roses and a souvenir grey tie.

26. E.L James felt an Audi was the right brand of car for Christian, and the cars feature throughout.

27. Aside from cars, E.L James doesn't drop many band names, but the film does feature Ana in her trademark Converse sneakers. So which ones does Ana wear?. Chuck Taylor All Star Lo Tops.

28. E.L James was a producer on the film. "I was on-set every day," she says. "Seeing the characters and story come to life was an intense and surreal experience. I'm very happy with the casting."

29. One of the film's producers, Michael De Luca, likened the lead characters to Pride and Prejudice's Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy. Coincidentally, the BBC's famous Elizabeth Bennet from 1995, Jennifer Ehle, plays Ana's mother, Carla.

30. "It was a closed set, and so we couldn't be there for those very intimate scenes...but so much of the movie turns on those intimate scenes," said producer Michael De Luca. "We'd be in our trailers, bit [the actors] were miked, and we had cans---you know, headphones---but I actually got shy from listening."

31. James is working on another book. Will it feature romance? "I believe that's what readers enjoy most about Fifty Shades," she says. And? "When people fall in love, a certain amount of friskiness inevitably follows."

32. While Christian is always imploring Ana to eat more food, the truth is Fifty Shades is full of mouthwatering dishes. Check Joanne Boston's Pinterest page featuring food mentioned in the trilogy.

33. Brian Hilby, the Heathman Hotel's bartender, has created a "Fifty Shades of Gin" cocktail with gin, house-made rhubarb purée, lime and simple syrup.

34. The lead characters have their own Twitter accounts:  @ChristianTGrey and @AnaRSTeele.

35. In 2004, director Sam Taylor-Johnson, then Sam Taylor-Wood, was known as an artist. In London in 2004 she exhibited a video installation called David, which was a study of David Beckham, filmed in a single take, sleeping.

Everything you need to know about Dakota & Jamie:

36. To play clumsy graduate Ana, Dakota Johnson had her blonde hair gradually darkened and acquired a blunt, choppy fringe.

37. Dakota is the daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson. Her credits include The Social Network, 21 Jump Street and the sitcom Ben and Kate.

38. Melanie Griffith tweeted on September 3, 2013, "My beautiful child Dakota has been chosen to play Ana Steele. Look out world! Here she comes!!! #proudmama."

39. But Griffith's not buying her ticket yet: "My daughter doesn't want me to. I don't think it would be appropriate."

40. "I understand Don Johnson is very upset about her being in the film," said Dakota's grandma, Hitchcock actress Tippi Hedren. "He had the same feeling I did. I've seen the trailer. That's all I have to watch."

41. Dakota Johnson also isn't put off by the story's steamy content: "I don't have any problem doing anything," she said. "The secret is I have no shame."

42. Jamie Dornan is married to Colin Farrell's ex-wife Amelia Warner, who had their first child, "Three days before filming started," he says, "It was a mad time. Not ideal preparation for any job, to be honest."

43. Dornan is used to being in shades of grey---Calvin Klein undies, that is. "I've done two shoots in my underwear...But that tag---underwear model--- I just can't get rid of it."

44. As prep, he visited a sex dungeon: "I saw a dominant with one of his two submissives. I was like, 'Come on, guys. I know I'm not paying for this, but, I'm expecting a show'. It was an interesting evening."

45. Despite the book's content, you won't see Dornan's, er, manhood on the big screen. "Your dignity is intact in as much as it's all tucked away in a little flesh-coloured bag...As a guy, you put all your essentials in a little bag and you tie up like a little bag of grapes."

46. Dornan's role in TV's The Fall also called for some bondage, but in a more terrifying way: his serial-killer character liked to tie his victims to their beds before they come to a violent end.

47. As Ana's sexual education evolves, so does her look. Victoria Down, head of the makeup department, created a date night-worthy look that you can re-create with Maybelline New York's Master Smoky Shadow-Pencil ($14.95), which comes with its own smudging  tool for the ultimate seductive night-time eye.

48. S&M doesn't bother him. "I'm an extremely liberal person, I don't five a fuck," he said last year. "If people are into that, they're into that."

49. All this sauciness is a long way from his background: his grandparents were Methodist lay preachers and he attended Methodist College in Belfast.

50. Christian Grey fears nothing about flogging, but Dornan fears it from fans: "I almost don't want to put this out there into the ether, but I fear I'll get murdered, like John Lennon, by one of those mad fans at the premiere," he says. "A lot of people are very angry that I'm playing this character. And I'm a father now, and a husband. I don't want to die yet."
