Dakota's Next Project - Suspiria Remake + Director Quotes Info

Information about the Project.

Brief Synopsis of the remake from IMDb: "A young ballet dancer [Dakota's character] travels to a prestigious dance academy in Europe, only to discover that it is run by a coven of witches."

From Food World News:  So what will make Luca Guadagnino's 'Suspiria' different from Dario Argento's? "[My version] is going to be set in Berlin in 1977," the director said. "It's going to be about the mother and the concept of motherhood and about the uncompromising force of motherhood. It's going to be about finding your inner voice - the title is very evocative on these grounds." The 'A Bigger Splash' director also revealed that the remake will have a different focus due to his own personal interests.

"I have a very strong interest in German literature and film, so I think [my] 'Suspiria' will have to focus very strongly on that moment in history, in 1977, when Germany was divided and a new generation was claiming and asking to recognize the debt of guilt that forged the new Germany after the war against the fathers who wanted to deny the responsibility," Guadagnino explained.

Luca Guadagnino's plans for 'Suspiria' will not only take a new turn, but it will also feature different actors. The director confirmed that Isabelle Fuhrman and Isabelle Huppert, who were originally casted by David Gordon Green, will not appear in his remake.

"That was for a version by David Gordon Green," Guadagnino said. "That's not the case for me. I can't say anything about the casting right now. I will announce very soon."

From Variety:  What’s on the horizon?
Lucas: "I'm going to direct a remake of Dario Argento’s "Suspiria". I’m going to shoot the movie this winter. I think my friends at StudioCanal will be part of it."

From HitFix"one of the reasons Guadagnino has set Suspiria as his next project is because he wants to reunite with Dakota Johnson, Matthias Schoenaerts,Ralph Fiennes and Tilda Swinton, his primary cast from A Bigger Splash." So good was the experience on this film that helmer and stars "want to try to make it an annual experience."

From AV Club: Last we checked, David Gordon Green’s purported remake of Suspiria was as doomed as a ballet student flailing around in a pit of barbed wire. But, according toHitFix, fans of Dario Argento’s 1977 horror masterpiece shouldn’t slip on their black leather killing gloves just yet: The project lives, and is reportedly moving forward with a new director, Luca Guadagnino, director of 2009’s I Am Love and the upcoming A Bigger Splash.

Guadagnino, who was originally attached to the project as a producer, talked about the remake at the Venice Film Festival, indicating that he and Green had parted ways due to conflicting visions for the film. Now Guadagnino—an actual Italian!—is in charge, telling Variety, “I’m going to direct a remake of Dario Argento’s Suspiria. I’m going to shoot the movie this winter.” Guadagnino’s version of Suspiria takes place in Berlin in 1977, and while plot details are still scarce, he says, “it’s going to be about the mother and the concept of motherhood and about the uncompromising force of motherhood. It’s going to be about finding your inner voice. The title is very evocative on these grounds.”

Guadagnino’s plan for the film also involves reuniting with the cast of A Bigger Splash, namely leads Dakota Johnson, Matthias Schoenaerts, Ralph Fiennes, and Tilda Swinton, with whom Guadagnino says he had one of the best on-set experiences of his career. Johnson’s wide-eyed brunette look does recall Jessica Harper in the original, and Tilda Swinton already has experience playing a witch. Bring Goblin back to do the score, and we’ll change the status of this one from “unholy abomination” to “could be okay.”

From Dakota's Interview with AnOther Magazine:  "Plus, she’s good fun to be around. People who work with her usually want to repeat the experience; she’s already deep in ballet training for a second project with Guadagnino, a remake of Dario Argento’s cult witchcraft horror Suspiria. “I’m so terrified of it. I have crippling self doubt!” she says. “But the things I’m the most afraid of, I run towards.”"
